How BTU Sizing Works in Singapore

BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. In Singapore's tropical climate, you typically need 500 BTU per square metre of room area, with a 25% climate adjustment for our year-round heat and humidity.

Factors That Affect BTU Requirements

  • Room size — larger rooms need more cooling capacity
  • Ceiling height — higher ceilings mean more air volume to cool
  • Sun exposure — west-facing rooms get significantly hotter
  • Room type — kitchens generate extra heat from cooking
  • Occupants — each person adds about 600 BTU of body heat

Common Aircon Sizes in Singapore

  • 9,000 BTU (1 HP) — small bedrooms, studies (up to 12m²)
  • 12,000 BTU (1.5 HP) — standard bedrooms, small living rooms
  • 18,000 BTU (2 HP) — master bedrooms, medium living rooms
  • 24,000 BTU (2.5 HP) — large living rooms, open-plan areas
